So, an introduction - my name is Daniel, I'm from Wellington, New Zealand and I'm heading off on my OE (Overseas Experience) to the UK in about a month and a half. I've only ever been to Australia and The Cook Islands before, so will be my first time in the Northern Hemisphere and all the countries up there I will get to visit. Travelling is the name of the game - its high time I saw the world, or at least a decent portion of it and NO, it isn't just to go see trains here, there and everywhere. Yes its true that the UK probably has more steam trains running around than anywhere else in the world, particularly on the main lines (except maybe China where they are still used in industry) and yes there will be a wealth of trains to be seen and yes I will go see some but that's not the point of the exercise but it will no doubt be a nice bonus along the way. Although I'd be lying if I said it isn't going to have some bearing on how I travel or where I travel to for some of my travels. I also enjoy photography - so expect photos to accompany most posts.
So anyway - I have a blog now. The purpose of having thr blog? to share my upcoming travels in a manner that is easy and does not have to be repeated over a number of mediums. Facebook tends to be image-heavy and content-poor, though is great for quick snippets and can still be used to share the blog posts. Instagram and Flickr are also image heavy, I don't have an Instagram (at least not yet) and I don't want to use my existing Flickr for general travel photos nor set up a new one. A picture might be worth 1000 words, but its not so great for emphasising the particular words you want to convey sometimes. I could do email updates, but I used to send out my train photos that way and I found it time consuming and boring after a while. So, a blog it is - and after experimenting with at least 3 blog providers I have settled upon Weebly, simply because its drag and drop and can even be done with a relative level of sophistication from my phone - so, anywhere and anytime.
The name of this blog? I actually wanted to call it "An Idiot Abroad" but that's the name of a very funny television programme by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant and besides, that name is already taken on Weebly. I've ended up settling on "A Broad Horizon" because it seems like the best of a lack of ideas on my part - I'm going abroad, people always tell me when I go overseas I'll be broadening my horizons (but "Broader Horizons" is already taken on Weebly) and there's a slight nod to trains in there in that I'll be visiting countries with tracks which are broader in width than NZ (The UK is Standard Gauge rather than Broad Gauge but since NZ is narrow gauge, it kinda works). A suggested name of "Not Trains" would be a bit of a misnomer as there will be a little bit of trains but apparently that's the joke. Yeah... nah.
So there we have it...
