A short post this time - on Saturday afternoon I caught up with some Britbounders whom I had met during the week before to watch the Oxbridge Rowing Race, the annual rowing battle on the Thames between Oxford and Cambridge. Thanks to Sasha, we had an excellent spot on the river wall to watch the race from and conveniently close to The Old Ship which was serving drinks and food. It was an excellent afternoon in the sunshine with good company, watching the various boat races take place and the river come up from a small channel to going bank to bank in a relatively short period of time (leaving some people stranded down in the river, and had to be rescued by a zodiac boat!) before the main race about 6pm. I have no reason to favour one team over the other, but Oxford having won slightly less races overall (78 to Cambridge's 81) meant they were the underdogs and so I favoured Oxford for the win. As they passed, Oxford was about 2 lengths in front - the Cambridge supporters conceded it was too much of a gap to make up, and sure enough Oxford won. The riverbank was absolutely chocka with people, the crowd at least 4 deep behind us if not more by the time of the actual race and the bars were doing a roaring trade - and there's no laws against taking your beverage off the premises onto the public areas, which is quite neat actually. It was my first visit to Hammersmith as well, quite a pleasant wee area really! I must remember the race for next year, I wonder who will win next time?
