So we went - we saw - and we headed back after about 2 hours after a wander. Not much to see here, move along!
We don't get out to West Berlin very often, and so far had not made it to Berlin's west-most "suburb" - Spandau. Spandau is far enough out that its almost another town in itself, is part of Berlin - and was part of West Berlin in the era where West and East Germany were separate. We had intended to go visit the Christmas Markets there following Denise & David's visit, but me misplacing my camera yet again put paid to that trip. But we thought we'd go out there one Sunday late in January and see it. This is not going to be a long post because the answer is, there's not much to see in Spandau at all. Its just like any other suburb, particularly suburbs or towns from the West - clean, tidy but not a lot going on. We had a look at the Spandau Arsenal but after finding out how much it was we didn't go in, as the main point would be to get the view from the tower - but it was a bit of a miserable day. The Arsenal is where the term "Spandau Ballet" comes from which describes the results of shooting someone with a machine gun that originated from here, and the music group (from London) used the term as their band name. There wasn't much to do in Spandau at all, and certainly no ballet to see! actually the one sight which I thought was interesting were the travelators into the U-Bahn station - they didn't work, and in fact the track had been ashphalted over! How bizarre.
